Textura Wines is a family project that started in 2018 in Portugal, in the Dão region, on the slopes of Serra da Estrela, and involves _biological_ viticulture, _terroir_ wine production and wine tourism.

The brand created by two Brazilians has reached some of the country’s top restaurants and features a label that pays tribute to a grandmother “with a Portuguese soul.”

Quitting a lucrative career in the investment world to dedicate oneself to wine might sound crazy, but that's exactly what Marcelo Villela de Araújo did. In 2018, he left financial markets for viticulture, and seven years later, he now owns a company with more than 30 hectares of vineyards and award-winning wines. The passion began early, in childhood, and led him to explore the world in search of new wine experiences. What started as a hobby became a life project — and success soon followed.

The 55-year-old investor was born in Rio de Janeiro and always had a fascination with Europe and its wines. As a teenager, he began exploring the old continent, but it was at 45 — already married and with children — that he chose Porto to start a new life with his family, “far from the insecurity of Brazil.” What he never imagined was that this city would give him the courage to leave finance and pursue winemaking.

The winemaker moved in 2015 with his wife, Patrícia Berardi, after buying a house in 2014. In the early years, he continued working in the same field and even opened an office in Porto, while his wife, an environmental engineering professor, finished a post-graduate degree. However, he soon realized that this change was the opportunity to finally explore the field he was passionate about: winemaking. He left his company and started studying at the School of Oenology.

“I've always been passionate about wine. I started by tasting nearby references during my youth — Chilean and Argentine wines — and later moved on to the French and Italian classics. But ever since I tried wine around age 25, I’ve always been interested in understanding the origin, the grape varieties, and learning more about each label,” Marcelo tells NiT. Luckily, he found a partner who shared and encouraged this hobby, joining him on several trips across Europe with the goal of tasting different wines.

“In Brazil, we had the habit of hosting dinners with friends where we explored new bottles at each other’s homes. Wine became important for building relationships during our years living in São Paulo, far from our families,” he recalls.

Here in Portugal, the experience wasn’t much different. During his oenology course, he met several producers and winemakers, and it was through those relationships that he later launched his own business. The idea of investing in this sector started taking shape during one of the course units, which required developing a wine project. He visited several estates in Alentejo and Douro, but it was the Serra da Estrela region that won him over.

“As soon as I came here with Patrícia, we realized there was a rich historical heritage and old vines, as well as established producers and stunning landscapes. Serra da Estrela had everything we needed to start our company, despite the distance from Porto,” he says. The decision was sealed when they found an abandoned old textile factory, which became the inspiration for the project’s name: Textura Wines. It was in that century-old space that they installed the winery, tasting room, and wine tourism center — all with granite walls, cork floors, and burel decoration.

**Textura Wines**

The location in Gouveia shaped the rest of the project. “We ended up choosing to make terroir-driven wines, and instead of a single estate, we have vineyards in several places, divided between Penalva and Gouveia,” he adds.

In 2018, he began cultivation and production in a rented winery. The following year he purchased the property and, from the 2018 harvest, produced the first wines — which only hit the market in 2021 due to extended aging caused by the pandemic. Textura Wines stood out for their lower alcohol content and complexity, and were a success. In 2022, the 2019 Vinha Negrosa from Serra da Estrela was awarded “Wine of the Year” by Revista de Vinhos.

What might have seemed like a surprise was, for Marcelo, a confirmation of something he already suspected: he had bet on an unusual blend that worked very well. “It’s a blend of two iconic red grape varieties from the region — Jaen and Tinta Pinheira. In Portugal, we usually rely on Touriga Nacional for top-tier wines, but we wanted to do things differently and focus on the Dão’s queen variety,” he explains. “When we won the award, we were already on the wine lists of some of the country’s top restaurants,” he adds.

The uniqueness of Textura Wines lies in the region itself. With over 30 hectares of vines, Marcelo splits cultivation between mountain-adjacent areas, where the cool nights result in grapes with different ripening profiles. In Penalva, the granite soil and dense surrounding vegetation “make the wines more intense.” In both regions, he chooses low-intervention practices and uses only “a small amount of sulfites to keep the wines as healthy as possible.”

**“The brand combines tradition and innovation to create wines with distinct character — balanced and sophisticated.”** The portfolio includes 15 different labels: three whites, ten reds, and two rosés, each with its own identity and profile. However, the best-seller remains Textura da Estrela (€22). “We bottle 13,000 bottles of white wine per year, the same number of red, and just as many rosé — all distributed through Portuguese wine shops and restaurants like Alma and those from the Avillez Group, as well as to the US, Canada, Brazil, Norway, the UK, and Sweden,” he says. Recently, they’ve also expanded to Japan, Israel, and Poland.

The portfolio is completed by the entry-level range Pretexto (white, red, rosé, and palhete), the premium Pura range, and also Encoberta, Constructo, Vinha Negrosa, and D. Áurea — a single-varietal Bastardo that pays tribute to his grandmother Áurea. “My grandmother was the daughter of Portuguese parents and kept our national roots alive in the family. She truly had a Portuguese soul — always bringing people together at home and hosting big lunches and parties for friends and relatives,” says Marcelo. “Since the beginning of the project, I told Patrícia that if we ever made a special wine, it would be named after her. And that’s what we did. Dona Áurea was made in 2020 and in 2021 was ranked second-best in blind tastings,” he adds.

A marca de dois brasileiros chegou aos melhores restaurantes do País e tem um rótulo que é uma homenagem à avó “com alma portuguesa”.

Largar uma carreira lucrativa no mundo dos investimentos para se dedicar aos vinhos pode parecer loucura, mas foi exatamente isso que Marcelo Villela de Araújo fez. Em 2018, trocou os mercados financeiros pela viticultura e, sete anos depois, é hoje dono de uma empresa com mais de 30 hectares de vinha e referências premiados. A paixão começou cedo, ainda em criança, e levou-o a correr mundo à procura de novas experiências enológicas. O que era um hobby transformou-se num projeto de vida — e o sucesso não tardou a chegar acabou por chegar. 

O investidor de 55 anos nasceu no Rio de Janeiro e sempre teve um fascínio pela Europa e pelos vinhos europeus. Durante a adolescência começou a explorar o velho continente, mas foi aos 45 anos, já casado e com filhos, que escolheu o Porto para começar uma nova vida com a família “longe da insegurança do Brasil”. O que nunca imaginou é que esta cidade lhe iria dar coragem para deixar a área financeira para se dedicar à enologia.

O enólogo mudou-se em 2015, com a mulher Patrícia Berardi, sendo que já tinham comprado casa em 2014. Nos primeiros anos continuou a trabalhar na mesma área e até montou um escritório no Porto, enquanto a mulher, professora de engenharia ambiental, terminava uma pós-graduação. No entanto, rapidamente percebeu que com a mudança podia finalmente dedicar-se a explorar o ramo que sempre o apaixonou: a enologia. Deixou a empresa e começou a estudar na Escola de Enologia.

“Sempre fui apaixonado por vinho. Comecei por experimentar durante a juventude as referências de proximidade, ou seja, chilenas e argentinas e depois passei para os clássicos franceses e italianos. Mas desde que experimentei, com cerca de 25 anos, sempre me interessei por perceber a origem, as castas e aprofundar um pouco mais os conhecimentos sobre cada rótulo”, explica Marcelo à NiT. Por sorte, encontrou uma companheira que também o acompanhava e encorajava neste hobby e acompanhou-o em várias viagens pela Europa com o objetivo de provar vários vinhos.

“No Brasil tínhamos o hábito de fazer reuniões com amigos para jantar e explorar garrafas novas em casa uns dos outros. O vinho acabou por ser importante para criar relações nos tempos em que vivemos em São Paulo, longe da família”, recorda.

Por cá, a experiência não foi muito diferente. Durante o curso de enologia conheceu vários produtores e enólogos, e foi através dessas relações que mais tarde conseguiu lançar o seu próprio negócio. O objetivo de investir neste setor começou a ganhar forma numa das cadeiras do curso, na qual teve de desenvolver um projeto de vinho. Visitou várias quintas no Alentejo e no Douro, mas foi a região da Serra da Estrela que o conquistou.

“Assim que vim cá com a Patrícia percebemos que havia um grande património histórico e vinhas velhas, assim como produtores estabelecidos e paisagens lindíssimas. A Serra a Estrela tinha tudo o que era necessário para criar a nossa empresa, apesar da distância ao Porto”, refere. A decisão acabou por ficar fechada após encontrarem uma antiga fábrica de têxteis que estava abandonada e que serviu de inspiração ao nome do projeto: Textura Wines. É neste espaço centenário que instalaram a adega, a sala de provas e o espaço de enoturismo, com paredes de granito, chão em cortiça e decoração em burel.

**Os vinhos Textura**

O espaço em Gouveia ditou o desenvolvimento do resto do projeto. “Acabámos por escolher fazer vinhos de terroir, e em vez de uma única quinta temos vinha em vários locais, divididos entre Penalva e Gouveia”, acrescenta.

Em 2018 começou a cultivar e a trabalhar numa adega arrendada. No ano seguinte comprou a propriedade e, a partir da colheita de 2018, produziu os primeiros vinhos, que só chegaram ao mercado em 2021, após um estágio prolongado devido à pandemia. Os Textura Wines destacaram-se pelo baixo teor alcoólico e pela complexidade, e foram um sucesso. Em 2022, o Vinha Negrosa 2019, da Serra da Estrela, foi distinguido como “Vinho do Ano” pela Revista de Vinhos.

O que poderia ter sido uma surpresa, foi apenas a constatação que Marcelo já suspeitava: tinha apostado num blend pouco usual, mas que resultava muito bem. “Trata-se de um blend de duas castas tintas emblemáticas da região, a Jaen e a Tinta Pinheira. Normalmente em Portugal apostamos em vinhos de topo com a Touriga Nacional, mas quisemos fazer diferente e apostar na casta rainha do Dão”, explica. “Quando ganhou o prémio já estávamos nas cartas de vinhos de restaurantes de topo do País”, acrescenta.

A diferença dos Texturas Wines está na própria região. Com mais de 30 hectares de vinhas, Marcelo divide o cultivo entre as regiões mais próximas das montanhas, onde consegue uvas com maturação diferentes devido às noites frias da serra. Em Penalva, o solo granítico e a densa vegetação à volta das vinhas “torna os vinhos mais densos”. Em ambas as regiões, opta pela baixa intervenção e por utilizar apenas “uma pequena quantidade de sulfitos, de forma a conseguir manter as referências o mais saudáveis possíveis”.

“A marca combina tradição e inovação na criação de vinhos de caráter distinto, equilibrados e sofisticados.” No portefólio têm 15 rótulos diferentes, que se dividem entre três brancos, 10 tintos e dois rosés, todas com identidades e perfis diferentes. No entanto, o mais vendido continua a ser o Textura da Estrela (22€). “Engarrafámos 13 mil garrafas de branco por ano, o mesmo número em tinto e outros tantos de rosé que são distribuídos por garrafeiras e restaurantes portugueses, como o Alma e os do Grupo Avillez e também para os EUA, Canadá, Brasil, Noruega, Reino Unido e Suécia”, afirma. Recentemente, chegaram também ao Japão, Israel e Polónia.

O portefólio fica completo com o entrada de gama Pretexto (branco, tinto, rosé e palhete), o topo de gama Pura e ainda o Encoberta, o Constructo, o Vinha Negrosa e o D. Áurea (um monocasta feito com Bastardo), que é uma homenagem à avó Áurea. “A minha avó era filha de portugueses e mantinha as raízes nacionais na nossa família. Tinha muito a alma portuguesa de juntar as pessoas em casa e dar grandes almoços e festas para a família e amigos”, conta Marcelo. “Desde o início do projeto que dizia à Patrícia que quando tivéssemos um vinho especial que lhe daria o nome dela. E assim foi. O Dona Aurea foi feito em 2020 e em 2021 foi escolhido como segundo melhor em provas cegas”, acrescenta.

Textura Wines, a wine project in the Dão region founded by Marcelo Villela de Araújo and Patrícia Berardi, strengthens its technical team, consolidating the coordination of the areas of oenology and viticulture.

With around 30 hectares of organically farmed vineyards located between Vila Nova de Tazem and Penalva do Castelo, the company is committed to integrated viticulture and winemaking management, incorporating complementary technical profiles that ensure consistency in the project.

The new technical team includes Marcelo Villela de Araújo, owner and winemaker, who founded the company in 2018, and Luís Seabra, consultant winemaker who has been involved in the project since its inception. Hugo Melo, an organic viticulture consultant from Bairrada who has worked with producers such as Luís Pato, Quinta dos Murças, Quinta do Ameal, and Vadio, also joins the team. The most recent addition is João Alves, who has over a decade of experience in the Douro region, working for companies such as Quinta da Gaivosa, Quinta do Vale Meão, Quinta do Tedo, and Menin Wine Company, and has also worked at Chateau Gruaud Larose in Bordeaux.

“This consolidation of the team reflects the importance we place on integrating viticulture with oenology. We believe that this alignment will allow us to continue to express the unique character of Dão, through wines of identity and authenticity, in a continuous process of quality improvement,” says Marcelo Villela de Araújo.

**1. Pura Branco 2022 – JR 17.5**

“Even less fruity than Textura da Estrela 2022, more stony/limestone and salty, with a slight hint of flint. But there is still lime and lime leaf with a touch of grapefruit purity. Full-bodied in the mouth, more evidence of oak than in Textura da Estrela, but it is by no means an oaky wine. Pure as its name suggests, fresh, penetrating, and with a long, salty, mouthwatering finish. The oak and slight reduction note frame the charming fruit.

**2. Pura Tinto 2021 – JR 17.5**

“Medium garnet with a soft rim. Delicate, open, and fragrant with wild red fruits, herbs, and an impression of wild scrubland (the Portuguese equivalent of the garrigue of southern France). Tart like cranberry, but seductive like wild strawberry. Finely modulated tannins are chewy but smooth, even caressing, more chalky as they develop in the mouth, but still providing enough structure for the wild, spicy fruit. Muscular, long, and delicious. Pure in name and pure in nature.”

**3. Vinha Negrosa Red 2020 – JR 17**

“Deep red. Fragrant and spicy, the dark fruits exude freshness even before being tasted. High acidity, finely dry texture, resulting in a refined, dry, mouthwatering ensemble, with almost chalky tannins in its dry texture, which accumulate in the mouth with each sip. Although the tannins are very fine, this wine currently has a youthful texture that, in my opinion, would benefit from another year in the bottle, and will age for much longer. At the moment, the flavor is a little austere—a kind of bold, vigorous, and lean quality—but I think it will evolve into elegance.”

**4. Textura da Estrela Branco 2022 – JR 17**

“Immediately more intense than Pretexto 2023 and less fruity, more stony. But there is still a penetrating freshness of citrus and cedar lime. A very light impression of cedar and a touch of peppery spices. Intense, but difficult to analyze. On the palate, round but with slight friction in the texture, it fills the mouth but descends to a fresh and precise finish, with a very slight toasty aftertaste, although it is the opposite of a wine with oak notes. Even with the bright citrus flavors, there is also something more savory/salty.

**5. Textura da Estrela Tinta Pinheira Red 2022 – JR 16.5**

“Medium garnet with a soft rim. Beautifully and subtly fragrant, with vibrant red fruits and a hint of vanilla (but not the intense, dominant vanilla you get in some oak barrels). But there is also a dustier/mineral note that is even more evident in the dry, fine, chalky tannins. Incredible freshness, dry chalky texture. Lean but fragrant and surprisingly long. A refined version of this often rustic variety. The tannins have been extremely well handled to give a dry, chalky texture, but without astringency.

**6. Pretexto Branco 2023 – JR 16.5**

“Grapefruit, lemon, fresh herbs, very pure and a striking creamy impression from the lees aging. Dry, slightly chewy, it captures the attention and offers intense freshness with a tart and fresh finish – even though the acidity is not particularly high.”

“Ainda menos frutado que o Textura da Estrela 2022, mais pedregoso/calcário e salgado, com uma ligeira nota de sílex. Mas ainda há lima e folha de lima com um toque de pureza de toranja. Encorpado na boca, mais evidência de carvalho do que no Textura da Estrela, mas não é absolutamente um vinho com notas de carvalho. Puro como o próprio nome, fresco, penetrante, e um final longo, salgado e de fazer crescer água na boca. O carvalho e a ligeira nota de redução emolduram a fruta encantadora.

**2. Pura Tinto 2021 – JR 17,5**

“Granada médio com borda suave. Delicado, aberto e perfumado com frutos vermelhos silvestres, ervas e uma impressão de matagal selvagem (o equivalente português da garrigue do sul da França). Azedo como o arando, mas sedutor como o morango silvestre. Taninos finamente modulados são mastigáveis, mas suaves, até mesmo acariciantes, mais calcários à medida que se desenvolvem na boca, mas ainda assim fornecem estrutura suficiente para a fruta silvestre e picante. Musculoso, longo e delicioso. Pura de nome e pura por natureza.”

**3. Vinha Negrosa Tinto 2020 – JR 17**

“Vermelho profundo. Perfumado e picante, os frutos escuros exalam frescura mesmo antes de serem saboreados. Alta acidez, textura finamente seca, resultando num conjunto refinado, seco e de fazer crescer água na boca, com taninos quase calcários na sua textura seca, que se acumulam na boca a cada gole. Embora os taninos sejam muito finos, este vinho apresenta atualmente uma textura jovem que, na minha opinião, beneficiaria de mais um ano na garrafa, e envelhecerá por muito mais tempo. Neste momento, o sabor é pouco austero – uma espécie de qualidade ousada, vigorosa e magra – mas penso que evoluirá para a elegância.”

**4. Textura da Estrela Branco 2022 – JR 17**

“Imediatamente mais intenso que o Pretexto 2023 e menos frutado, mais pedregoso. Mas ainda há uma frescura penetrante de citrinos e lima-de-cedro. Uma impressão muito leve de cedro e um toque de especiarias apimentadas. Intenso, mas difícil de analisar. No paladar, redondo, mas com ligeira fricção na textura, enche a boca, mas desce para um final fresco e preciso, com um final de boca muito ligeiro a tostado, embora seja o oposto de um vinho com notas de carvalho. Mesmo com os sabores cítricos brilhantes, há também algo mais saboroso/salgado.

**5. Textura da Estrela Tinta Pinheira Tinto 2022 – JR 16,5**

“Granada médio com uma borda suave. Perfumado de forma bela e subtil, com frutos vermelhos vibrantes e um toque de baunilha (mas não o tipo de baunilha intensa e dominante que se obtém em alguns barris de carvalho). Mas há também uma nota mais poeirenta/mineral que é ainda mais evidente nos taninos secos, finos e calcários. Frescura incrível, textura calcária seca. Magro, mas perfumado e surpreendentemente longo. Uma versão refinada desta variedade frequentemente rústica. Os taninos foram extremamente bem manipulados para conferir uma textura seca e calcária, mas sem adstringência.

**6. Pretexto Branco 2023 – JR 16,5**

“Toranja, limão, ervas frescas, muito puro e uma impressão cremosa marcante do envelhecimento das borras. Seco, ligeiramente mastigável, capta a atenção e oferece uma frescura intensa com um final azedo e fresco – mesmo que a acidez não seja especialmente elevada.”

The red wine D. Áurea 2021 achieved a prominent position in the 18th edition of the prestigious “TOP 10 Portuguese Wines,” held in the emblematic Palácio da Bolsa. The announcement of the winners took place during the renowned event Essência do Vinho – Porto, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary this year. The award selection was carried out through a rigorous blind tasting conducted by 46 international judges representing countries such as Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, among others.

In total, 50 samples of Portuguese wines were evaluated, pre-selected by Revista de Vinhos based on the highest scores and the most outstanding examples from 2023. D. Áurea earned a place of distinction within this select group, taking second place in the Top 10 Portuguese Wines – red wines. This recognition is unequivocal testimony to its exceptional quality and its standing among the best wines of Portugal.


O vinho tinto D. Áurea 2021 alcançou uma posição de relevo na 18ª edição do prestigiado “TOP 10 Vinhos Portugueses“, realizada no emblemático Palácio da Bolsa. O anúncio dos vencedores teve lugar durante o renomado evento Essência do Vinho – Porto, que celebrou o seu vigésimo aniversário neste ano. A seleção dos premiados decorreu através de uma rigorosa prova cega, conduzida por 46 jurados internacionais, representando países como Portugal, Brasil, Espanha, Itália, Reino Unido, Suíça, entre outros.


No total, foram avaliadas 50 amostras de vinhos portugueses, pré-selecionadas pela Revista de Vinhos com base nas mais altas pontuações e nos exemplares mais destacados de 2023. O D. Áurea conquistou uma posição de destaque neste seleto grupo, ficando em segundo lugar no Top 10 Vinhos Portugueses – vinhos tintos. Este reconhecimento é um testemunho inequívoco da sua qualidade excepcional e do seu lugar entre os melhores vinhos de Portugal.

**Marcelo Araújo and Patrícia Berardi had a dream of producing great wines in the Dão.** And they followed the Burgundy model, taking advantage of small differences in terroir to achieve results that are sometimes more structured and intense, sometimes more elegant and fresh. There’s nothing like seeing a dream come true.

Do you remember how the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation presented the latest Pêra Manca in Brazil before even launching it in Portugal? **Brazilians are major consumers of Portuguese wine, but they are also, increasingly, respected producers.** Names like Lima & Smith (Quinta da Covela), Menin Douro Estates, ManzWine, or Fernanda Zucarro (from Quinta Alta) are some of the examples now joined by Textura Wines, in the Dão. A story that began like so many others: with a dream.

Patrícia Berardi has a background in environmental engineering, specializing in circular economy, and came to Portugal as a visiting professor at the University of Porto — but **also with the secret wish to find a vineyard where she and her husband could make wine.**

**Marcelo Villela de Araújo worked nearly 30 years in investment banks and hedge funds in Brazil,** but when he moved to Portugal, he had already made a decision: **the financial world would stay on the other side of the Atlantic** and the future would be about discovering a vineyard in the Dão, specifically in the Serra da Estrela sub-region, where **"many of the fresh, elegant wines we most admired"** came from.

**"Wine was an old passion,"** Marcelo continues, "but I had never trained in the field and needed to understand the business seriously before taking the leap." So, while his wife taught the Master's in Environmental Economics and Management at UP, Marcelo enrolled in a postgraduate degree in Oenology at the Catholic University of Porto, followed by a course in Viticultural Management in Spain.

At the same time, they began looking for vineyards, "as close as possible to Serra da Estrela," and while doing so, **"we began to notice many abandoned textile factories"** left behind by the crises of the 1980s and 1990s, he recalls. That’s when they thought: **"what if we transformed one of these factories into our production and wine tourism center?"**

**Thus, Textura Wines was born in 2018,** "in one of those old factories, right next to the Serra da Estrela Natural Park" — and the name is both a tribute to the structure of Dão wines and to the textile industry of the region.

**Today, Textura owns around 28 hectares of vineyards (and 40 of land),** spread across the areas of Gouveia and Penalva do Castelo. Most are located in the Gouveia municipality, "near Casa da Passarella and MOB," Marcelo explains. In Penalva do Castelo, they have two estates: one at 600 meters altitude and another at 500. Granite and clay soils — "which give the wine a bit more structure," he says.

The terroirs are quite distinct despite their proximity, and that’s where the idea of emulating Burgundy came from. Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, for instance, **produce very different wines despite being close to each other.** That’s what happens in the Dão — and it should be explored.

**One Dão, many terroirs**

That’s the idea behind the structure of the Textura Wines portfolio. It begins with the Pretexto range: fresh, elegant wines that serve as an introduction to the Dão and its diversity. These are wines priced around 14 euros, including a white made from Encruzado and Bical with very little oak; a red with very soft tannins; and a rosé made from Jaen, with some color and gastronomic potential. There's also a Palhete that brings the best of both: 70% Jaen and Alfrocheiro, and 30% Encruzado and Bical.

The Textura da Estrela line represents the vineyards of Gouveia — some newer, some quite old (around 60 years). Prices range from 18 euros (for the 100% Tinta Roriz rosé) to 28 euros for the Tinta Pinheira (aka Rufete). The red blend (Jaen, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro) is very balanced and fresh, a result of slow grape maturation and granite soils. An excellent example of the Serra da Estrela terroir Marcelo spoke of.

Encoberta and Constructo are two wines from the Penalva parcels, which still feature granite soils but now with clay as well. These conditions give the wines more structure and complexity, while preserving freshness. Encoberta is more accessible and direct: an elegant red made from 50% Alfrocheiro, 20% Touriga Nacional, 20% Jaen, and 10% Tinta Roriz. Constructo is a step above: a more ambitious wine with extended aging, deep red fruit, more density, and a clearly gastronomic profile. This is also reflected in the prices: 22 and 42 euros, respectively.

The Pura line is dedicated to the old vineyards of Serra da Estrela — with the goal of respecting their legacy. These are authentic wines, with that refined rusticity that only old vines can deliver. Available in white and red, priced at 37 and 39 euros, they are among the highlights of the portfolio.

Then there’s Vinha Negrosa (53 euros) and Dona Áurea (59 euros), the top-tier wines made from the best vineyard parcels. Vinha Negrosa is a powerful red, with dark fruit, balsamic notes, and very well-integrated freshness. Dona Áurea, on the other hand, has a very seductive profile, yet remains serious and sophisticated. These are wines meant for aging and help tell the story of contemporary Dão.

**From the world to Portugal**

The first bottling from Textura Wines happened in 2020 — right in the middle of the pandemic, which delayed the project by about a year — but recognition came quickly. In 2022, one of their whites made it into Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100, and Vinha Negrosa was named Wine of the Year by Revista de Vinhos. The following year, Dona Áurea placed second.

At first, Textura exported nearly 80% of its production, but these distinctions have helped build its presence in the domestic market, especially through restaurants and wine shops. The U.S. was once their main export market but has been losing ground to the U.K. and Scandinavian countries. Production currently stands at around 90,000 bottles per year, half of which are in the Pretexto range. Dona Áurea is the most exclusive, with a limited production of 700 bottles. Around 2,000 bottles are made of Vinha Negrosa.

Textura Wines also stands out for its sustainability efforts. The vineyards are certified organic, and this year, the wines will be as well. The company practices low-intervention viticulture and is a model of circular economy: treating and reusing water, composting, sorting and repurposing waste, using lightweight bottles and recyclable boxes, avoiding wood in packaging, and generating clean, renewable energy on-site. Patrícia Berardi, with her background, is clearly the key figure in this sustainability commitment.

With the brand now well established, the next step is wine tourism. **"The Dão needs it,"** says Marcelo. "Sometimes people just don’t visit because there’s no offering — and we want to change that. We want people to come here, taste the wines where they’re made, get to know the project, the story…" Who knows — maybe they’ll catch the same dream as this couple?

**Marcelo Araújo e Patrícia Berardi tinham o sonho de produzir grandes vinhos no Dão.** E fizeram como na Borgonha, aproveitando pequenas diferenças de terroir para conseguir um resultado ora mais estruturado e intenso, ora mais elegante e fresco. Não há nada como ver um sonho realizado.

Lembram-se de como a Fundação Eugénio de Almeida apresentou o último Pêra Manca no Brasil, antes sequer de o lançar por cá? **Os brasileiros são grandes consumidores de vinho português, mas são também, cada vez mais, produtores de referência.** Nomes como Lima & Smith (Quinta da Covela), Menin Douro Estates, ManzWine ou Fernanda Zucarro (da Quinta Alta) são alguns dos exemplos aos quais se juntou a Textura Wines, no Dão. Uma história que começou como tantas outras: com um sonho.

Patrícia Berardi é formada em engenharia ambiental, com especialização em economia circular, e veio para Portugal como professora convidada pela Universidade do Porto — mas **também com o desejo secreto de encontrar uma vinha onde ela e o marido pudessem produzir vinho.**

**Marcelo Villela de Araújo trabalhou quase 30 anos em bancos de investimento e hedge funds no Brasil,** mas quando veio para Portugal já tinha tomado uma decisão: **o mundo financeiro ficaria do lado de lá do Atlântico** e o futuro passava por descobrir uma vinha no Dão, mais especificamente na sub-região da Serra da Estrela, de onde vinham **"muitos dos vinhos frescos e elegantes que mais admirávamos".**

**"O vinho era uma paixão antiga"**, continua Marcelo, "mas nunca tinha tido formação na área e precisava de entender o negócio a sério, antes de avançarmos." Assim, enquanto a mulher orientava o Mestrado de Economia e Gestão do Ambiente na UP, Marcelo inscreveu-se numa pós-graduação em Enologia na Universidade Católica do Porto e, em seguida, num curso de Gestão Vitivinícola em Espanha.

Ao mesmo tempo, começaram a procurar vinhas, "o mais perto possível da Serra da Estrela" e, enquanto o faziam, **"começámos a perceber que havia muitas fábricas de têxteis abandonadas"** pela crise dos anos 1980 e 1990", recorda-se. Nessa altura pensaram: **"e se transformássemos uma destas fábricas no nosso centro de produção e enoturismo?"**

**Assim nasceu a Textura Wines em 2018**, "numa dessas antigas fábricas, bem junto ao Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela" — e o nome é tanto uma homenagem à estrutura dos vinhos do Dão como à própria indústria têxtil da região.

**Hoje, a Textura tem cerca de 28 hectares de vinha (e 40 de terra)**, distribuídos entre as zonas de Gouveia e Penalva do Castelo. A maioria no concelho de Gouveia, "perto da Casa da Passarella e da MOB", conta Marcelo. Em Penalva do Castelo têm duas quintas: uma a 600 metros de altitude, outra a 500. Solos de granito com argila — "o que dá um pouco mais de estrutura ao vinho", diz.

São terroirs muito distintos, apesar da proximidade, e "daí nasceu a ideia de fazer como na Borgonha. A Côte de Nuits e a Côte de Beaune, por exemplo, **fazem vinhos muito diferentes apesar da curta distância"**. É o que acontece no Dão — e isso deve ser explorado.

**Um Dão, vários terroirs**

Assim se explica a estrutura do portefólio da Textura Wines. Começando pela gama Pretexto, com vinhos frescos e elegantes, mas em jeito de introdução ao Dão e à sua diversidade. São vinhos na casa dos 14 euros, com um branco de Encruzado e Bical, e muito pouca madeira; um tinto de taninos muito suaves; e um rosé de Jaen, com alguma cor e um toque gastronómico. Temos ainda um Palhete com o melhor: 70% de Jaen e Alfrocheiro e 30% de Encruzado e Bical.

Os Textura da Estrela já representam as vinhas de Gouveia — algumas mais novas, outras com uma certa idade (60 anos). Os preços variam entre os 18 euros (do rosé 100% Tinta Roriz) e os 28 euros do Tinta Pinheira (ou Rufete). O tinto (Jaen, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro) é um vinho muito equilibrado, fresco, fruto de uma maturação lenta das uvas e dos solos graníticos. Um excelente exemplo do tal terroir da Serra da Estrela de que falava Marcelo.

Encoberta e Constructo são dois exemplos das parcelas de Penalva, marcadas ainda pelos solos graníticos, mas já com presença de argila. Estas condições conferem aos vinhos outra estrutura e complexidade, mantendo a frescura. O Encoberta será mais acessível e direto: um tinto elegante, feito com Alfrocheiro (50%), Touriga Nacional (20%), Jaen (20%) e Tinta Roriz (10%). O Constructo é um passo acima: um vinho mais ambicioso, com estágio prolongado, fruta vermelha profunda, mais densidade e uma vocação gastronómica evidente. Isso reflete-se nos preços: 22 e 42 euros, respetivamente.

A linha Pura é dedicada às vinhas velhas da Serra da Estrela — e o objetivo é respeitar essa herança. São vinhos muito autênticos, com aquele toque de rusticidade refinada que só as vinhas velhas conseguem dar. Disponíveis em branco e tinto, por 37 e 39 euros, são dos ex-líbris do portefólio.

Já o Vinha Negrosa (53 euros) e o Dona Áurea (59 euros) são os topos de gama, feitos a partir das melhores parcelas de vinha. O Vinha Negrosa é um tinto poderoso, com fruta escura, notas balsâmicas e uma frescura muito bem integrada. O Dona Áurea, por sua vez, tem um perfil muito sedutor, mas igualmente sério e sofisticado. São vinhos de guarda e que ajudam a contar a história do Dão contemporâneo.

**Do mundo para Portugal**

O primeiro engarrafamento da Textura Wines aconteceu em 2020 — em plena pandemia, o que atrasou o arranque do projeto em cerca de um ano —, mas o reconhecimento não tardou. Em 2022, um dos brancos entrou no Top 100 da Wine Enthusiast e o Vinha Negrosa foi eleito Vinho do Ano pela Revista de Vinhos. No ano seguinte, o Dona Áurea terminava em segundo lugar.

Nos primeiros tempos, a Textura chegou a exportar quase 80% da produção, mas estas distinções têm ajudado à conquista no mercado nacional, feita sobretudo através da restauração e das garrafeiras. Os Estados Unidos também já foram o principal destino de exportação, mas têm vindo a perder peso para o Reino Unido e países escandinavos. A produção ronda atualmente as 90 mil garrafas por ano, metade das quais na gama Pretexto. O Dona Áurea é o mais exclusivo, com uma produção limitada a 700 garrafas. Do Vinha Negrosa são cerca de 2000.

A Textura Wines distingue-se igualmente pela aposta na sustentabilidade. As vinhas estão certificadas como biológicas e, já este ano, também os vinhos passarão a estar. A empresa pratica uma viticultura de baixa intervenção e é um exemplo de economia circular: tratam e reutilizam a água, fazem compostagem, triagem de resíduos e reaproveitamento de materiais, utilizam garrafas leves e caixas recicláveis, evitam o uso de madeira no embalamento e produzem energia limpa e renovável na propriedade. Patrícia Berardi, com a sua experiência, é obviamente a peça-chave neste compromisso com a sustentabilidade.

Com a marca a consolidar-se, o próximo passo é o enoturismo. **"O Dão precisa disso"**, diz Marcelo. "Por vezes as pessoas não vão simplesmente porque não existe oferta — e nós queremos mudar isso. Queremos que as pessoas venham até aqui, provem os vinhos na origem, conheçam o projeto, a história…" Quem sabe se não ficam contagiadas pelo sonho deste casal?

In issue 432 of November 2025, Revista de Vinhos magazine, with text and tasting notes by José João Santos, highlights that Marcelo Villela de Araújo continues to forge his own path in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela.

"A Brazilian determined to live in Porto, he invested in wine in Dão but with a clear advantage: he knew the production philosophy he wanted to follow and the type of wine with which he identified.
He currently produces an average of 90,000 bottles per year, 50% of which are destined for export - the US, Norway, the UK, and Japan are the top destinations. The 28 hectares of vineyards are organically farmed and most of the wines will be certified as such from the recently completed 2025 harvest."
